Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

The lymphatic system is the body’s system for draining fluids from tissues back to the blood system.

It has many other functions: filtering of blood, absorbing and transporting of food fats and being an important component of the immune defence system.

Sometimes our body is overstrained with the incidental amount of fluid. The results are oedema. Therefore the reasons are manifold. For example, it could be venous stagnation, traumatic and postoperative injuries, sympathetic reflex dystrophy (Sudeck’s disease), cancer treatment or oedema accompanied with paralysis or as a symptom of rheumatism and fibromyalgia.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmical but powerful treatment which improves or restores the activity of the lymph vessels. This technique can reduce or prevent fluid retention, enhance the removal of toxins from body tissue and support the immune system. Lymphatic Drainage is extraordinarily effective in helping to restore lymph function, reduce pain and improve wound healing.

Lymphatic Drainage is developed as a cancer aftercare treatment but in meantime it is used as a standard treatment  after nearly every major surgery in European hospitals and clinics because of the huge benefits, and is used increasingly in North America.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is often a complementary with Compression Therapy as Complete Decongestive Therapy.

I offer to measure and order compression garments and to train my patients in self treatments and how to look after  their oedema.
